OSHA Requirements for Flammable Storage

It's important for employers to familiarize themselves with OSHA regulations and standards related to flammable storage cabinets to ensure compliance and maintain a safe working environment. Additionally, consulting Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for specific requirements and recommendations related to flammable liquid storage is essential.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has specific requirements for flammable storage cabinets outlined in its standard 29 CFR 1910.106 - Flammable liquids. Here are the key OSHA requirements for flammable storage cabinets:

  • Easy Access Battery storage Building with Multiple Doors

Construction Requirements: Flammable storage cabinets must be constructed to specific standards to ensure durability and fire resistance. Cabinets should be made of sturdy materials such as steel and designed to withstand fire exposure.

  • Fire Resistance: The cabinet must be able to resist the effects of fire for a specified duration to provide protection to the stored flammable liquids. OSHA requires that flammable storage cabinets be designed and constructed to have a fire resistance rating of at least 10 minutes, which means the cabinet should be able to contain a fire within it for at least 10 minutes.

  • Capacity Limits: OSHA specifies the maximum allowable quantities of flammable liquids that can be stored in a flammable storage cabinet based on the cabinet's design and fire rating. Typically, flammable storage cabinets are designed to hold specific volumes of flammable liquids, and the maximum capacity should not be exceeded to maintain safety.

  • Labeling and Identification: Flammable storage cabinets must be clearly labeled as "Flammable - Keep Fire Away" or with a similar warning to indicate the contents and associated hazards. Labels should be prominently displayed on the cabinet doors for easy identification.

  • Ventilation: Flammable storage cabinets should have proper ventilation features to prevent the buildup of flammable vapors inside the cabinet. However, ventilation openings should be designed with fire protection measures to ensure that fire does not spread through the vents.

  • Placement and Location: Flammable storage cabinets should be located in designated areas away from ignition sources such as heat, sparks, or flames. Cabinets should be positioned to allow easy access for emergency response and firefighting activities.

  • Maintenance and Inspection: OSHA requires regular inspection, maintenance, and testing of flammable storage cabinets to ensure they remain in good condition and continue to provide effective protection. Any damaged or non-compliant cabinets should be repaired or replaced promptly.
